Why Matcha May Be the Skincare Ingredient You’re Missing

August 2023

There’s nothing I love more than good food and glowing skin, especially good food that promotes glowing skin.

WHAT IS MATCHA?

For the last three months, I’ve been experimenting with drinking matcha. Matcha originates in China and today, is primarily grown in Japan. It’s made from ground green tea leaves and is actually said to be one of the most naturally antioxidant-rich foods on the planet. Unlike coffee, the caffeine in matcha is released much more steadily because of the amino acid known as L-Theanine, making it a popular choice for a boost without the jitters.

HOW DOES IT IMPROVE SKIN HEALTH?

Now, onto the good stuff…

As I mentioned above, matcha is chock-full of antioxidants, most notably EGCG, Vitamin C, E and A. These work to brighten and even the skin, keep it supple and moisturized, and reduce inflammation (breakouts, acne and redness = inflammation).

Matcha is also renowned for its high chlorophyll content which gives it that signature, bright green colour. The chlorophyll helps to detoxify the liver which is vital in maintaining clear skin. In fact, in Traditional Chinese Medicine, the liver is the organ that corresponds to the sides of the face. So, when I notice breakouts there, I up my matcha intake to target those specific areas.

Finally, that same L-Theanine from earlier helps to soothe the nervous system. When we’re relaxed, we’re in a state of healing; here, we can lessen our inflammation and calm breakouts, acne and redness. This is personally why I feel like my skin looks immediately refreshed after my cup of matcha.

HOW DO I MAKE IT?

Ingredients:

-       1 serving of your favourite matcha powder (I like DoMatcha)

-       2.5 tbsp coconut milk (I like Cha’s Organics)

-       0.5-1 tsp raw honey

-       1/3 cup water

-       Matcha whisk

Method:

01.     Heat the water in a pot over medium heat for 3-5 mins.

02.     Once hot (not boiling), add in matcha powder.

03.     Whisk quickly in zigzag motions until frothy.

04.     Add in coconut milk and whisk again until combined.

05.     Add honey and keep heat on until honey is fully dissolved.

06.     Serve, sip and enjoy!

I switch the order of the matcha and coconut milk in this vid and also whisk the matcha separately but you get the point…

While you can certainly apply matcha topically in a cleanser or DIY mask, I’ve found making a latte to be the most effective. Let me know if you try this! You can find more recipes here on the blog or on my Insta!
